This report continues work reported by Troyer concerning long-term trends in numbers and composition of brown bears in Katmai National Park and Preserve. Aerial surveys were conducted on eight salmon streams from 25 July through 10 October 1986. Bear numbers were unusually high, increasing by 80% between 1984 and 1986. Sixty-six bears were observed in 1986, of which 34 were lone bears, 13 were maternal females, 6 were cubs, and 13 were yearlings.
