From the Article: "Recent field observations, made with the use of modified mountain-climbing techniques in the canopy of mature big-leaf maples (Acer macrophyllum Pursh) ) in the Hoh River Valley of the Olympic Peninsula revealed that some trees put forth an extensive network of adventitious roots which penetrate these canopy detrital mats." Discussion continues as to other species exhibiting this morphological trait and roles of canopy roots in nutrient cycling.
