This project began in fall 1996, with establishment of two permanent reference stands (in Humboldt Redwoods State Park and in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park). Both stands are in old-growth redwood but in different situations and with different species composition/canopy structure. Two of the included trees are among the world's largest; the first year's effort focuses on these two. Little is known of the canopy biology of coast redwoods. Work this season is primarily descriptive with measurements of variables for individual trees. Later studies are planned for epiphyte ecology, tree physiology, and wildlife in the study groves. The report includes data summaries (table of density and basal area for tree species in the stands, graphs, and appendix tables).
