Resource management issues facing five Cape Cod estuaries (Hatches Harbor, Pilgrim Lake/Salt Meadow, Pamet River, Herring River, and Nauset Marsh/Town Cove) are used to establish objectives for and guide the development of marine environmental monitoring systems for these Cape Cod National Seashore assets. First, Park staff were consulted to identify issues for each estuary and the region as a whole. Second, literature relevant to these issues was compiled from recent Park Service reports and other sources; it is listed by estuary in Appendix A. This estuary specific literature review provided an assessment of current information relevant to the issues. Third, the analysis of issues and available literature were used to establish objectives for each water body. Fourth, the preliminary technical aspects of monitoring were identified as parameters and field activities. Primary objectives, parameters, and field activities were summarized in a table for each estuary. Subsidiary objectives and additional information appear in the supporting text. Finally, citizen volunteer roles are discussed for each estuary.
