The several theories concerning evolution toward flightlessness are reviewed, and examples of such fauna are given, with referral to the Southern Appalachians on page 48. A tentative conclusion from the study is that stable populations of beetles in restricted areas have less need for flight than do unstable ones in less limited regions, therefor less need for wings.
