This book focuses on biological and geological studies/inventories conducted on and near Buck Island Reef. During the past two years, some of the important resources of Buck Island Reef National Monument have been inventoried (especially reefbuilding corals and fishes, the two major visitor attractions) and some of the basic processes controlling their interactions and rates of change have been investigated (see Gladfelter et al., 1977). The principal objective in this study was to increase our understanding of the dynamics of reef ecosystems in general, Buck Island Reef in particular. In order to fulfill this objective, the project was divided into two separate portions: biological and geological, which were integrated in the overall analysis to develop a better understanding of reef history.
