Carotenoids of cavernicolous crayfish

This study investigated the hypothesis that pigmentation is dependent on the amount of carotenoid in the diet rather than on the presence of light. Tests compared a white eyeless cavernicolous crayfish, Orconectes pellucidus pellucidus, with Cambarus bartonii tenebrosus, a crayfish not so well adapted for cave life. Methodology is presented, a discussion of results follows, and suggestions for further study are made.
