Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring, Air Quality Inventory
Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring, Air Quality Inventory.
One of the 12 core natural resource inventories, the Air Quality Inventory objective is to provide actual-measured or estimated concentrations of indicator air pollutants such as ozone, wet deposition species (NO3, SO4, NH4, etc.), dry deposition species (NO3, SO4, HNO3, NH4, SO2), and visibility (extinction for 20% cleanest days and 20% worst days for visibility). This inventory is considered complete for a park when data are delivered via the NPS Air Atlas. The air quality inventory was completed for the period 1995-1999 with pollutant estimates for all the I&M parks. Since then, periodic updates have been completed including 1999-2003, 2001-2005, 2003-2007, 2004-2008, and 2005-2009. The Air Atlas maps and the estimate tables have been updated for each of these time periods. Since the monitoring networks that provide the data continue to function, updates and the ability to track trends are presently included to update the inventory and reporting products. Intended uses of this inventory include: to determine compliance with national standards, for assessments of effects on vegetation, and as early indicators of possible resource injury. This inventory provides information for policy and pollutant control decisions and tracking information on the effectiveness of control strategies.
