Diatoms were surveyed at Lake Tuendae in Mojave National Preserve. Morphometric characterization was performed on resting spores produced by cultures of Chaetoceros muelleri Lemm., Chaetoceros muelleri var. subsalsum (Lemm.) Johan. Et Rush., and Chaetoceros transisetus sp. nov. The analysis revealed that the resting spores of C. transisetus were distinct from those of both varieties of C. muelleri, primarily in the morphology of its secondary valve. C. transisetus can be differentiated from C. muelleri var. subsalsum by its setae orientation, spore morphology, physiology, and fatty acid profile.
