Thermoregulation and flight activity in the Painted Lady butterfly, Vanessa cardni, was studied using both live specimens and thermal mannequins. Activity is restricted within certain body and ambient temperatures. Flight has a definite cooling effect on body temperature. Behavioral exploitation of environmental thermal heterogeneity allows a high degree of thermoregulation.
