The bioaccumulation of mercury and selected organic contaminants are being assessed in six national park units in the western Great Lakes region. The study targets spatiotemporal patterns in contamination, factors influencing bioaccumulation of methylmercury in aquatic food webs, and parks and surface waters where methylmercury poses a potential health risk to fish, piscivorous wildlife, and humans. Initial project results for mercury in samples collected from predatory fish, prey fish, and larval dragonflies at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are summarized.
