Forest monitoring plots were established at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (PIRO) and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SLBE). Mesic sites were dominated by sugar maple (Acer saccharum) at PIRO and American beech (Fagus grandifolia) at SLBE. Management implications for PIRO target beech bark disease and alteration to stands of sugar maple. Reduction of deer numbers and establishment of exclosures are recommended for SLBE.
