Highlights of Montezuma Castle National Monument natural resource inventory project

Drost C. Highlights of Montezuma Castle National Monument natural resource inventory project

Facts and points of interest relevant to the MOCA/MOWE inventories from an investigators' meeting. Eight fish species, three natives and five non-natives, are found in the MOCA/MOWE portion of Wet Beaver Creek. Montezuma Well has 138 aquatic species. At the Castle unit, 368 plant species were found and 311 species were found at MOWE; about 10% of the vegetation is non-native. The small mammal diversity is remarkable for such a small area, as is the bird community, which includes 91 neotropical migrants that have been recorded. Rattlesnakes at the Monument are unusually small. The population of ungulates has changed dramatically over the past 150 years.
