Results of a pollution prevention survey conducted as part of the National Park Service Intermountain Region's Park Environment 2000 Initiative. Recom Applied Solutions, Incorporated, conducted a pollution prevention survey of the Tuzigoot National Monument as a part of the National Park Service, Intermountain Region, Park Environment 2000 Initiative. This report is the culmination of this effort. A summary of the findings at the park is presented in Section 1, and specific source reduction recommendations are outlined in Section 2. Appendix A contains a list of materials provided to the Park Project Coordinator during the survey visit. Appendix B presents the comnpleted pre-visit questionnaire, and Appendix C contains a copy of each pollution prevention flyer provided during the survey visit. The survey visit was conducted on Tuesday, April 28, 1998. Mr. Walter Berg was the Recom representative and Mr. Earl "Lenny" Hempstead, Facility Manager, was the park's designated Park Project Coordinator. The park superintendent was not present. Mr. Hempstead led Mr. Berg through the visit to the specific areas on the park. Mr. Hempstead attended the In-Briefing and Out-Briefing. Overall Assessment Tuzigoot National Monument has shown outstanding and solid leadership in managing environmental affairs to a point that today it is a hazardous waste-free park. The underground storage tank removal effort is nearing completion (September 1998 completion date) and represents the last significant environmental hurdle at Tuzigoot National Monument. Several pollution prevention recommendations were suggested that can curb waste generation even further. Overall, the environmental situation at Tuzigoot National Monument is excellent. Compliance Improvement Actions As a part of the survey visit, our team addressed hazardous waste compliance concerns, and made specific recommendations for improvement. These were pointed out during the visit and are not addressed in any detail in this report (see Section 1.5). A significant step forward, however, would be to hold a park-wide cleanup where all existing unused hazardous materials could be eliminated. Pollution Prevention Actions During the visit and the Out-Briefing, specific pollution prevention recommendations were discussed. Implementing these recommendations would be valuable in removing the few remaining operations that can produce hazardous waste. These are discussed in detail in Section 2 of this report. Meeting Park Environment 2000 Initiative Goals Tuzigoot National Monument can become a hazardous material, hazardous waste-free park. Furthermore, the park can become fully responsive to all nine goals of Park Environment 2000 before the year 2000. At this date, the park is almost there.
