Laguna Madre becomes much saltier than sea water because it lies in a semi-desert area, and has no river drainage to it. This saltiness, when it is especially great due to weather conditions, can cause large numbers of fish to die. An unsuccessful attempt to alleviate the salty condition was made by cutting passes to the Gulf Coast. There is not enough current into the laguna to effectively create an exchange of saltiness between waters of the laguna and the Gulf. Laguna Madre is dying as more and more sand from Padre Island is filling it in.
