Bird surveys and habitat assessment work were initiated at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, Iowa in 2005, to assist the park in assessing the ecological integrity of the grassland habitat and to determine which bird species utilize habitat in the developed areas through time. Fifty-five of the 56 bird species are permanent or summer residents to the area (Stokes and Stokes 1996). Therefore, these 55 species with potential for reproducing on the park have some value in characterizing the breeding bird communities of HEHO.Current efforts to restore and maintain the mixed vegetation at HEHO should provide a diversity of habitats necessary to support the eight breeding species of continental importance. Four grassland obligate species--Dickcissel, Eastern Meadowlark, Grasshopper Sparrow, and Sedge Wren--will serve as the best indicators of the ecological integrity of the grassland habitat on the park.
