Monitoring of the species Texas trailing phlox (Phlox nivalis ssp. Texensis) began on June 29, 2004 and ended on August 20 of the same year. This process was part of an ongoing effort to restore the dwindling populations of Texas trailing phlox to an acceptable sufficiency within three East Texas counties (Hardin, Polk, Tyler) in which the species is historically endemic. An acceptable level is defined as no less than twelve independantly sustainable, genetically viable populations occuring in the wild. Over the course of nearly two months, fourteen plots containing reintroduced specimens were monitored and photographed. Information was collected and documented for a total of 1331 individual plant locations. Many individually planted locations did not show evidence of successful phlox survivorship. A total survivorship rate of 36.3% in Big Sandy and 4.7% in Turkey Creek was observed.
