Bats in eastern woodlands

This report was prepared by Bat Conservation International for the Southern Regional Offices of the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It provides a brief overview of the current and historical conservation status of eastern bat populations, natural history accounts for all eastern bat species, and a discussion of the effect of land management actions on bats and bat habitat, including the management of forests, water, geological resources, environmental contaminants, and artificial roosts. It also provides a brief review of how bats and bat habitat are addressed by national forest land and resources management plans in the U.S. Forest Service's Eastern and Southern Regions. An example of a silvicultural prescription designed specifically to address bat conservation in a hardwood forest is included as Appendix I, an extensive bibliography on forest bats is included in Appendix II, and excerpts from forest management plans are included in Appendix III.
