In August 2007, the Southeast Coast Network and the University of Georgia conducted anassessment of water and sediment quality at Fort Pulaski National Monument (FOPU) as apart of the NPS Vital Signs Monitoring Program. Monitoring was conducted following methods developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a part of the National Coastal Assessment Program and included field measurements of water clarity and dissolved oxygen. Sediment conditions were assessed for metals, organic contaminants and total organic carbon. Overall surface water conditions indicate generally good water clarity conditions and fair togood dissolved oxygen conditions. No sites were rated as poor with respect to either if theseparameters. Sediment concentration of most metals ranged from below detection levels to levelsconsidered unlikely to have a significant impact on aquatic life. Only concentrations ofarsenic and nickel were detected at levels shown to occasionally have impacts on aquatic life.
