Kenai Fjords National Park Coastal Campsite Monitoring Program

Hahr M. 2009. Kenai Fjords National Park Coastal Campsite Monitoring Program. Kenai Fjords National Park

In 1988, Kenai Fjords National Park (KEFJ) initiated a coastal campsite impact monitoring program to better understand the distribution, location, and condition of backcountry campsites and associated resource impacts. There have been numerous challenges to the successful implementation of this program including changing and ambiguous protocols, subjective impact assessment parameters, inefficient field methods, lack of training for survey crews, data collection errors, archaic data management systems, inconsistent and opportunistic survey efforts, and the absence of clearly defined program goals. Recent reviews of the KEFJ coastal campsite monitoring program by the park and the NPS Inventory & Monitoring program recommended significant changes to the monitoring protocol including use of updated field techniques such as high-precision GPS, electronic data collection using hand-held personal computers, improved training of field staff, and efficient data analysis and reporting tools. This report summarizes field activities and other efforts associated with the ongoing development and refinement of the KEFJ coastal campsite monitoring program in 2007 and 2008.
