The goals for fire line rehabilitation in Olympic National Park are to prevent soil erosion and reestablish native vegetation. This can be accomplished by a variety of methods ranging from water bar establishment, drainage dips, transplanting, seeding and covering the area with some form of mulch. To date, no experiments have been conducted to test the effectiveness of various types of commercially available mulch or "erosion mats". The following outlines an experiment conducted at Deer Park utilizing five native plant species and four types of commonly available mulches.
