This Historic Structure Report was prepared as part of the implementation of the Olympic National Park General Management Plan (approved August 8, 2008) and in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The buildings in the Headquarters Historic District represent two important periods in park development. The late Rustic buildings of the initial creation of the park express a legacy of early park architecture with the use of natural materials and emphasizing a design to blend with the setting. Yet, within these buildings were tones of modernistic architecture as a new generation of park designers came of age. The buildings of the Mission 66 period moved away from the design ethic of being subservient to the setting to an outlook that modern buildings could be efficient, cost effective, and created with a manufactured material (instead of hand work) while still being complementary to the park environment. These design treatments were the two major historical programs that developed the park as seen today, and are well represented in the Headquarters Historic District.
