Viruses populate virtually every ecosystem on the planet,including the extreme acidic, thermal, and saline environmentswhere archaeal organisms can dominate. For example, recentstudies have identified crenarchaeal viruses in the hot springs ofYellowstone National Park and other high temperature environmentsworldwide. These viruses are often morphologically andgenetically unique, with genomes that show little similarity togenes of known function, complicating efforts to understandtheir viral life cycles. Here, we review progress in understandingthese fascinating viruses at the molecular level and the evolutionaryinsights coming from these studies.
