Wetland maps are provided for the Strawberry Creek Restoration Site at Redwood National and State Parks, California. A discussion of existing wetland conditions, including a thick floating organic mat, is also provided. Redwood National and State Parks (REDW) staff members are preparing an Environmental Assessment for reestablishing the Strawberry Creek channel and restoring a naturally functioning stream and riparian ecosystem near the old REDW South Operations Center. The park requested assistance from the NPS Water Resources Division (WRD) in mapping wetlands at the site aspart of the anticipated compliance requirements for the project. WRD and REDW staff conducted field work for wetlands mapping at this location during September 1-2, 2009.This report presents the wetland maps that were requested by the park. Data forms that document the vegetation, soil, and hydrology findings and analyses we used to support our wetland boundary determinations are included in the Appendix. We also discuss potential effects of the proposed creek restoration on adjacent wetlands, and provide recommendations for additional analyses that may be necessary to evaluate these effects.The wetland maps and data will help REDW staff evaluate stream and riparian restoration alternatives through the NEPA process. They also can be used for wetland compliance,including application for a Section 404 permit under the Clean Water Act, compliance with NPSDirector’s Order #77-1: Wetland Protection, and compliance with California Game and Fish Department regulations.
