MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc. and NPS Southeast Regional Office. 2009. Vicksburg National Military Park: Environmental Assessment for the Cultural Landscape Report, Vicksburg National Military Park, National Park Service. Cultural Landscape - Miscellaneous. Southeast Regional Office/Kennesaw, Georgia

Vicksburg National Military Park (NMP) and Vicksburg National Cemetery, located in Vicksburg, Mississippi, comprise a unit of the National Park Service (NPS). The historic battlefield landscape is dense with monuments, markers, tablets, and plaques that serve as reminders of both the Civil War siege that occurred here and the subsequent efforts to commemorate the events. The park also includes earthen fortifications, reconstructed military features, historic bridges and buildings, the USS Cairo gunboat and museum, and 17 miles of tour roads. As part of the process to support long-range management decisions, NPS prepared a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for Vicksburg NMP that assesses the landscape’s character-defining features, documents historic and existing conditions, and provides treatment recommendations for preserving the park’s natural and cultural resources. This Environmental Assessment (EA) report analyzes the recommended treatment alternative, as well as other proposed alternatives and their impacts on the landscape. The EA aims to provide landscape management guidance that supports commemoration of the campaign, siege, and defense of Vicksburg by preserving resources and enhancing the visitor experience. Alternative C, through which Vicksburg NMP would rehabilitate the park landscape by focusing upon Civil War military resources, was selected as the Preferred Alternative. This is based on a combination of impact analysis, cost assessment, public comment, and visitor experience potential.
