The results of this study indicate that about 6,500 acres or about 35 percent of federally owned lands on Assateague sland qualify for wilderness designation. The emainder is or will be needed for intensive management nd development to successfully meet the other bjectives for the Refuge and Seashore. The proposed area, in the mid- section of the island, involves 882 refuge acres in Virginia, 418 in Maryland, and 5,200 acres of National Seashore in Maryland. The proposed lands are undeveloped, with primeval character and influence, and are without permanent improvements or human habitation.
