The subject project is the major rehabilitation of the existing south jetty at Ocean City, Maryland, shown on Flgures 1 and 2. Prior studies have indicated that due to the low helghtand permeability of the structure, significant quantities (about 40,000 cy./yr.) of sand are transported northward along the shoreline of Assateague Island and then through and over the nearshore section of the jetty. Once on the inlet side of the jetty, the sand is transported along the northern shorellne of Assateague Island by tidal currents and wave action, and eventually, deposits in a shoal which encroaches on the existlng Federal navigation channel, as shown on Figure 3. As a result, maintenance dredging in the channel has been required on anannual basis.
