Continued erosion and migration of the northern section of the Assateague Island National Seashore towards the mainland area is of significant concern to the National Park Service of the United States Department of the Interior. The changes in the position of the northern section of the Island between 1931 and 1972 are illustra ted in Figure 1. In order to analyze the erosion/migration processes, a study of the geomorphic changes and sediment transport along the northern section of Assateague Island was conducted. The following paragraphs discuss the major components of this study. The complete study is presented in the report entitled, "Assateague Island, Maryland Erosion Control Feasibility Study - Phase I" prepared by the Baltimore District Corps of Engineers (November 1985).
