Coastal Bays Shellfish Inventory

Rice C, Bussell R, Tarnowski ML, Homer ML. 1997. Coastal Bays Shellfish Inventory

This report presents the findings of the final year of a three year comprehensive effort to inventory the molluscan fauna of Maryland's coastal bays. Intended to establish baseline values for future management needs, both commercially important molluscs and ecologically valuable species have been targeted. During the three year period approximately 1,800 stations have been sampled using five different collection methods. Over 50,000 live individuals comprising 63 mollusc species have been collected; an additional ten species were represented by dead specimens only. Sixteen of these species had not been reported in previously publishedaccounts of the coastal bays, including three northern range extensions.
