Reversible chemical fertility control in feral horses

A microencapsulated form of testosterone propionate (MTP) was administered to free-roaming feral stallions intramuscularly, in an attempt to suppress spermatogenesis and inhibit fertility. Foal counts for control bands averaged 0.371 foals per mare: whereas for MTP-treatedbands the average was 0.066. There were no differences between control and drug-treated groups in any behavior endpoints studied. These results indicate that controlledreleaseMTP can provide measurable and reasonably effective fertility control in feral horses.
