Groups of 10 feral mares and 6 domestic horses were immunized with porcine zona pellucida (PZP) by 4 monthly injections of 2000-5000 PZP each, and a booster injection of 20000 PZP 6-10 months later. The immune response was reflected in high antibody titers as measured byimmunofluorescence with porcine oocytes and subsequent in vivo inhibition of fertility for at least 8 months in most of the mares treated. When antibody concentrations had decreased to lower levels in 4 mares, they conceived normally. There was no clinical evidence of abnormal side effects on ovarian function or on regained fertility following the immunization. In vitro sperm binding studies support that inhibition of binding is antiboay-related.
