In July 2002, the National Park Service (NPS), Northeast Region, entered into a cooperativeagreement with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's Division of NaturalHeritage (DCR-DNH) to conduct an analysis of the potential for natural heritage resources atfour Virginia NPS units: Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, GeorgeWashington Birthplace National Monument, Richmond National Battlefield Park, and PetersburgNational Battlefield. The agreement required that DCR-DNH develop a list ofrare plants, rareanimals, and significant natural communities that could potentially occur in each park and mapareas within each park where those resources could potentially occur.
