The effect of cadmium, zinc, copper and iron on growth of Nitzschia closterium and Prorocentrum micans was investigated. Copper was more toxic to Prorocentrum micansthan to Nitzschia closterium. Heavy metal levels (Cd, Zn, Cu and Fe) increased in exposed algae with respect to the controls. After centrifugation of the crude homogenate most metal was present in the pellet. Gel filtration of cystosolic samples on Sephadex G 75 failed to show the presence of specific metal binding ligands.
