Large quantities of seaweed are washed ashore along the Qatari coast. Their wide distribution and abundance (Dorgham & Muftah, 1987; Mshigeni & Oorgham, 1989/90) in this area could very well be utilized in assessing their bioaccumulating potential and contamination by heavy metals. Phillips (1977) has advocated the use of macroalgae as indicator organism for depicting the metal levels in a given milieu. Several investigators subsequently have shown that the use of marine algae as an indicator of heavy metal levels gives at least a qualitative picture of heavy metal contamination in the area of study
