To restore the floating marshes ofthe Barataria Unit ofJean Lafitte National Park and Preserve to their natural condition, a pilot study backfilling canals and removing manmade spoil banks, by grading to marsh level, is proposed. In their place would be more emergent marsh. Spoil banks deposited when the canals were dug (for oil exploration) will be removed and placed into the adjacent canals. Bottom sediments from the edge of Lake Salvador will be pumped on top ofthe tom down spoil banks, to marsh elevation, to foster the return ofthe emergent vegetation. Two canals have been proposed. One canal will receive dredge material in addition to the spoil banks, the other canal will receive only spoil bank material.
