This document was prepared to fulfill the following objectives: (1) a historic review and evaluation of the effects of inlet maintenance on adjacent National Park units and (2) to develop recommendations for remedial measures as part of the ongoing National Park Service Southeast Regional Office coastal research program. The study addresses Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Cape Lookout National Seashore, Cumberland Island National Seashore, Castillo de San Marcos and Ft. Matanzas National Monuments, Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Gulf Islands National Seashore. Recommendations include: (1) comprehensive strategies for resource monitoring and management using a multidisciplinary-team input; (2) establishment of a resource database on regional and park specific inventories; (3) environmental and economic impacts of non-structural vs structural options for inlet channel maintenance; (4) sand-management methods; (5) ship channel relocation; and (6) alternative use studies.
