The Natchez Trace is one of the best-remembered landmarks from the era of the United States' expansion into the Old Southwest. For over two decades in the early 1800's, it was one of the nation's most important roads. In 1995, the National Park Service in Tupelo, Mississippi contracted The Nature Conservancy to perform a reconnaissance-level, general biological survey of a selected stretch ofthe Natchez Trace Parkway. The Conservancy's survey spanned habitats in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee that have been altered by many millenia of human activity.
