Although island retreat has been most pronounced in the northernmost 6.5 km of the island, it is believed that the northern 10km stretch may be vulnerable to breaching. Until a long-term restoration plan is implemented, several alternatives have been proposed for the immediate restoration of northern Assateague Island to return the sediment supply and prevent a breach.
