During 2002, 30 stranded dead marine animals came ashore on Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland. Of the total animals stranded dead on the ocean shore, there were 26 sea turtles and 4 marine mammals. The average number of total strandings per year between 1991 – 2001 for the Maryland portion of Assateague Island was 16, with a range of seven to thirty animals.
