During 2003, 18 stranded dead marine animals came ashore on Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland. Of the total animals stranded dead on the ocean shore, there were five sea turtles and 13 marine mammals. The average number of total strandings per year between 1991 – 2002 is 17 for the Maryland portion of Assateague Island, with a range of seven to 31 animals.
