This article addresses the issue of neck collars causing abrasions, cuts, and discomfort to large or small animals that are being tracked and/or studied. It was suggested that a breakaway spacer be inserted between the ends of radio collars in order to tear apart if there was excessive pressure, if the animal's neck grew, or if there was rotting over time.
