Restoration of the historic condition and ecological functions of the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site (SAIR) turning basin and southern marsh area was initiated in the fall of 2007. To satisfy regulatory requirements as set forth by state and federal permitting agencies (e.g., US Army Corps of Engineers, Massachusetts DEP), to guide adaptive management actions, if necessary, and to enhance understanding of tidal freshwater wetland restoration practices, the National Park Service (NPS) implemented an intensive ecological monitoring program. This report presents the data collected during the first year of post-restoration monitoring for the following components of the monitoring plan: • Tidal Hydrology • River Geomorphology • Sediment and Water Quality • Benthic Invertebrate Community Baseline monitoring data were collected for each of these components during the planning and design phases of the project. These data can be used to compare to post-restoration data and evaluate changes in ecological functions as a result of the restoration.
