The Heartland Network of national parks initiated this study to develop a land use change segment within its Inventory and Monitoring program. The objectives were to: 1) characterize the current landscape surrounding Heartland parks and summarize patterns of land use change over time, 2) develop conceptual models showing linkages between ecological functioning within parks and land use change, and 3) identify indicators and evaluate methods for monitoring landscape changes in the future.
