Significant Ecological Features of the Appalachian Trail Corridor in New Hampshire

Report focusing on the Significant Ecological Features found along the Appalachian Trail Corridor in New Hampshire. This study was undertaken to determine the ecologically significant sites along thA. Appalachian Trail Corridor in New Hampshire. Historic data were compiled from tit Heritage data base and local experts. A work plan was initiated that included t use of aerial photos, State and National Wetland Inventory maps and soils maps. The Trail was surveyed from the air and most of the Trail was inventoried on the ground. Results of the study include lists of significant natural features that were known along the corridor and newly discovered ecologically important sites. A total of 50 sites were identified with a total of 401 element occurrences. Of these 401 occurrences, 285 were found or confirmed during the course of the study. Also included are the ranks and status of the elements of natural diversity documented from these sites,, descriptions of the sites and management recommendations. These data are presently being incorporated into the Natural Heritage database and will be made available to the National Park Service, the White Mountain National crest, the N. H. Department of Resources and Economic Development, and the ppropriate Trail clubs in the State.
