The University of Georgia Marine Extension Service (MAREX) conducted surveys in collaboration with the National Park Service at seven Southeast Coast Network parks over a four-year period beginning in 2007. MAREX performed water column profiles and collected water and sediment samples from 30 randomly selected stations within each park. Methods followed those developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a part of the National Coastal Assessment Program and include laboratory analysis for chlorophyll a, total dissolved nitrogen and phosphorous concentrations and field measurements of water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and salinity. Estimates of water clarity are made using secchi depth measurements and adjusted for naturally occurring water-clarity conditions. These methods are part of the Network’s Vital Signs Monitoring program and are part of an ongoing long-term water-quality monitoring program.
