Epilithic Aerial Algae of Great Smoky Mountains National Park

A report on the floristic study of aerial epilithic agal communities within GSMNP, involving the sampling and identification of aerial algae from communities overlying nine of the twenty four bedrock formations currently mapped within the park. A floristic study of epilithic aerial algae within GSMNP was undertaken as part of the park's All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory. Previous studies of algae in this park have not focused on the algae of aerial environments. Samples were collected in May 2001 from 9 separate bedrock formations in the park. One hundred and eighteen algal algal species are reported from 18 sites, and were the source of 108 new park records published in a recent checklist. Forty-six potentially new species were observed.
