This research investigated the influence of environmental factors and plant-plant interactions on survival and growth of key native dune species. Three separate experiments were conducted. The objectives of the first experiment were to determine the best season for planting maritime bluestem (Schizachyrium maritimum) and to compare the effects of plant spacing (30 and 45 cm) and natural sand accumulation and sand removal on survival and growth. Experiment two compared the effectiveness of planting patterns (zonation) on sand accumulation and plant survival and growth utilizing three coastal dune species [Sea oats (Uniola paniculata), Beach elder (Iva imbricata) and maritime bluestem]. Experiment three determined if competition or facilitation occurs among these coastal dune species in preliminary dune formation.
