Data were collected at eight spatially-balanced random locations at the Monument using an adaptation of the variable-circular plot (VCP) technique with distance estimation. Sampling activities occurred at the Monument in late April and again in late May in 2010. 254 birds representing 49 species were detected. Monitoring efforts resulted in the addition of 16 new species to the Monument’s official species list: chimney swift, little blue heron, laughing gull, royal tern, indigo bunting, American crow, seaside sparrow, purple finch, barn swallow, black-throated blue warbler, common yellowthroat, blue-winged warbler, brown-headed nuthatch, red-eyed vireo, and house finch. House finch was the only non-native bird detected.
