The goal of this project is to identify and document sites along the trail that support rare species and significant natural communities. Heritage Program (NYNHP) entered into an agreement for a natural heritage inventory of the Appalachian Trail corridor in New York State. The goal of this project is to identify and document sites along the trail that support rare species and significant natural communities. These data will be used to guide the land management programs of the Appalachian Trail (AT) and to ensure that these significant natural resources are not adversely impacted by the development, maintenance and operations programs of the AT for recreational purposes. The purpose of this interim report is to provide the Appalachian Trail Conference with an accounting of the inventory's progress to date. The first seven months of this study were used to compile historical information and background data from secondary sources, and to conduct field surveys for selected species and significant natural communities. This interim report discusses the results of this researchiand presents a brief work plan for the final year of the project.
