Landbird Community Monitoring at Canaveral National Seashore, 2010

Data were collected at 22 spatially-balanced, random locations at the Seashore using an adaptation of the variable-circular plot (VCP) technique with distance estimation. Sampling activities occurred at the Seashore in April and again in May 2010. 782 birds representing 64 species were detected, including no non-native species. Monitoring efforts resulted in the addition of one new species to the Seashore’s official species list: American crow. An evaluation of sampling effort relative to the number of species detected indicated that the sample may have underestimated bird diversity and a few additional samples are necessary to refine our estimates of diversity. Given the number of species known to occur at the Seashore in NPSpecies and the species detected, however, suggest bird diversity is likely high at the Seashore. Carolina wren, Northern cardinal, Eastern towhee, and red-bellied woodpecker were the most widely distributed species at the Seashore.
